Internship Handbook

Where age is just a number

A youth-led social venture reimagining ageing, leadership and community in modern India. Everything an HFC intern needs to know, in one place.

About Happy Folks Club

Who we are and why we exist

Two generations. One powerful ecosystem

The Happy Folks Club (HFC) is a youth-led social venture that brings young energy and elder wisdom together.

Here, youngsters learn leadership by serving, and senior citizens rediscover confidence, connection and purpose in a fast-changing world.

Rooted in Indian values of seva, dignity and respect, HFC combines tradition with modern tools, including digital literacy, structured learning and youth-driven execution.

India's silent paradox

HFC exists to bridge this gap, by providing internships to the youth and creating engaging activities for senior citizens.

Founder's Message

A note from Siddharth
Siddharth Kothari, Founder and Managing Director
From the Founder

โ€œHappiness is not by chance, but by choice.โ€

Siddharth Kothari, Founder and Managing Director

Greetings Interns, Siddharth here!

Our tagline, "Where Age Is Just a Number", has a two-way meaning.

  • It is never too late for senior citizens to venture out and enjoy life.
  • It is never too early for us youngsters to run an organisation like Happy Folks Club.

Happy Folks Club's work culture is as fun-filled and exciting as friend-based movies like YJHD, ZNMD, Dil Chahta Hai and 3 Idiots, yet it keeps its core beliefs and values so that we stay consistent and reach our goals.

We take pride in what we do and believe in utmost dedication and sincerity of work. We expect the same proactiveness and leadership from every intern, because we want you to experience a life-changing learning curve. That only happens if you completely immerse yourself in the opportunities and exposure of this internship.

Consider the 9 Maxims as your guiding light.

I believe a student's life must be filled with several colourful verticals and activities, which is why the responsibilities and regulations of this internship allow room for flexibility.

I'm excited to welcome each of you to Happy Folks Club. Let's create some amazing memories!

How Happy Folks Club Started

A park bench, a sad stranger and a big idea

Every big idea starts small. Ours started on a park bench, with a conversation nobody planned.

A student with a pen and a deadline
Chapter 1 ยท Exam season

A student with a pen and a deadline

Siddharth was a school student in the middle of his 12th board exams. Nothing about that week suggested he was about to start an organisation.

A walk in the park
Chapter 2 ยท Lalbagh

A walk in the park

Around the same time, Siddharthโ€™s father went for a walk in Lalbagh, Bengaluruโ€™s famous garden.

Someone who looked sad
Chapter 3 ยท The bench

Someone who looked sad

On the path he noticed a senior citizen sitting alone on a bench, looking low. Most of us would have walked on. He stopped.

โ€œTell me what is wrongโ€
Chapter 4 ยท The conversation

โ€œTell me what is wrongโ€

The senior citizen opened up and shared his problem. It was not about money or health. It was about something quieter.

A friend lost, a circle broken
Chapter 5 ยท The heart of the group

A friend lost, a circle broken

โ€œHe was the heart of our group, and now he is gone, and we are all disconnected.โ€

When one person who held a group of friends together goes, the rest can drift apart. Loneliness is not only about being alone. It is about losing the people who connect you.

Meanwhile, at home
Chapter 6 ยท Back home

Meanwhile, at home

Siddharth finished his day and came home, happy, with no idea that a story from the park was about to change what he did next.

His father tells him
Chapter 7 ยท A story shared

His father tells him

That evening his father shared what he had seen and heard in Lalbagh.

The idea that would not leave
Chapter 8 ยท Thinking it over

The idea that would not leave

Siddharth kept thinking about what his father had said. If one manโ€™s group falling apart could hurt this much, how many others were quietly feeling the same?

He gathers his friends
Chapter 9 ยท The team

He gathers his friends

He sat down with his friends and they decided to do something about it. That was the first team of Happy Folks Club.

They ask the seniors
Chapter 10 ยท 250 voices

They ask the seniors

Before building anything, they asked. They surveyed over 250 senior citizens to understand what was really missing.

The survey showed three big problems senior citizens face:

  • "I am a retired professional. How do I find chances to serve society again?"
  • "Is there any way to fill the gap between my generation and the present generation?"
  • "I just want a good network of friends to spend my time with. What do I do?"

The journey so far

  1. 10 May 2024: Summit 1.0

The very first event, held to find out whether this idea would be liked. 101 senior citizens attended and enjoyed it. Many started asking about HFC's next events.

  2. 16 June 2024: Swatantra begins

HFC launched "Swatantra - A Senior Citizen Skill School" on Father's Day. It ended with a graduation on 4 August (Friendship Day). The first Swatantra had two branches: Electronic City and Hebbal.

  3. Today

From that day on, Happy Folks Club was established. HFC now runs in multiple cities across India, offers corporate internships and jobs, and has grown from 2 initiatives to 10.

Code of Conduct

How we behave, with everyone

How every HFC intern behaves. This is the same Code of Conduct interns read inside the portal.

๐Ÿ’›Never Ever Be Rude to Anyone! You may not mean to be rude, but while texting, the opposite party might read your words rudely. So be careful!

Speak to seniors, teammates, and every member with patience, warmth, and dignity.

  • Be respectful even when you disagree. Disagreements are healthy, disrespect isnโ€™t.
  • If someone is rude to you, do not respond with rudeness. Their behaviour is their responsibility; your response reflects yours and HFCโ€™s and affects the larger picture.
  • If you cannot be polite, be quiet rather than being disrespectful.
  • Treat everyone as an equal contributor and create an environment where people feel comfortable participating.
  • Celebrate others' contributions and help your teammates shine.
๐Ÿ’ฌAlways communicate on WhatsApp Groups. No DMs, and even if there are calls happening, the call summary must be sent on the group.

Communication gaps create unnecessary problems.

  • Respond in HFC groups and do not allow communication gaps to grow.
  • Work-related communication and positive compliments should happen in the relevant HFC groups so that everyone has context and visibility.
  • If something is unclear, ask. Do not make assumptions about what others know or understand.
  • Explain instructions and ideas in simple, clear language. Speak as though you are explaining something to a person unfamiliar with the topic.
  • Be candid. If you do not understand something, say so. If you made a mistake, acknowledge it.
  • Communicate according to your audience. Learn how to present an idea without unnecessarily triggering, offending, or alienating people.
  • If you need help, ask for it early instead of allowing the problem to grow.
  • All discussions, follow-ups, updates, and task-related communication must be conducted in the group. Avoid taking discussions to DMs unless absolutely necessary. Any important information discussed privately must be brought back to the group so that everyone remains informed, accountable, and on the same page.
Call Etiquette
  • If someone does not answer your call, do not repeatedly call them.
  • Send a polite message instead and wait for a response.
  • Respect people's time and availability.
๐Ÿ“ฃPeople should SEE you work.Make your work visible, but never fake your work.

Jo dikhta hai, vo bikhta hai - What you see is what sells Good work deserves visibility, but visibility must always come from genuine work.

  • Share meaningful progress, updates, outcomes, and completed work.
  • Communicate your contributions so that your superiors and teammates know what you are working on.
  • Visibility is important for professional growth, recognition, opportunities, promotions, and building trust.
  • Never fabricate, exaggerate, or falsely report work to make yourself appear productive.
๐ŸŽฏTake Ownership TILL THE VERY ENDIf given a task, FINISH IT, even if nobody taught you how to finish it.

Also, don't just wait for tasks to be GIVEN. Seize your moment too!

  • Do not abandon a task after accepting responsibility for it.
  • Seek help when necessary, but do not transfer responsibility simply because something becomes difficult.
  • Do not assume that a task is completed until you have solid proof that it is actually completed.
  • Follow through until the required outcome is achieved and communicated.
  • If you are unable to complete something, communicate early rather than disappearing.
  • Do not wait for repeated reminders to complete work you have already committed to.
๐Ÿš€Take InitiativeLeadership is a mindset, not a title.

If nobody takes accountability, the work will not happen.

  • Do not wait for a leader to tell you every next step.
  • Identify what needs to be done and step forward.
  • Volunteer for responsibilities when appropriate.
  • Ask questions, suggest solutions, and bring ideas to the table.
  • If you notice a problem, do not merely point it out, think about how it can be solved.
  • Do not stop thinking simply because someone else is leading the task or group.
  • Maintain a leader's mindset regardless of your designation.
๐ŸŒฑGrow TogetherGrow together. Don't break.

HFC is a team. Individual growth should not come at the expense of someone else's growth.

  • Support your teammates.
  • Share knowledge and help others improve.
  • Do not pull someone down to make yourself look better.
  • Do not complain about another person's lack of work merely to highlight your own contribution.
  • Focus on creating value rather than competing for attention.
  • Celebrate collective progress.
  • Conflicts and differences may happen, but they should never break the team.
๐Ÿ’ฌ14 Day Advance Notice is Compulsory for Breaks! To take an authorised break, due to exams or any other reasons, you must raise a ticket 14 days in advance!

Upto 2 breaks are allowed in a typical internship, but they must be requested for, 24 hours in advance, BY RAISING A TICKET.

  • In these 14 days, your responsibilities must be temporarily shifted to someone else, and you must ensure that work happens smoothly during your break.
๐Ÿ•Š๏ธHandle Conflict With MaturityConflict is a part of life, but how we handle it defines our professionalism.
  • Listen to all sides before forming conclusions.
  • Do not react impulsively.
  • Ask questions patiently and seek clarity.
  • Address disagreements respectfully and transparently.
  • Do not retaliate when someone is rude.
  • Criticism or sensitive disagreements may be addressed privately through appropriate DMs rather than creating unnecessary public conflict.
  • Never allow personal conflicts to affect HFC's work, reputation, or team environment.
  • Keep the larger picture in mind: the organisation comes first.
๐Ÿ”Accept Feedback and Correct YourselfExperiences matter. Excuses do not.

Nobody gets everything right the first time. What matters is whether you learn.

  • Accept constructive feedback without taking it personally.
  • Correct mistakes when they are pointed out.
  • Do not repeatedly make the same mistake after receiving clear feedback.
  • Be stubborn about improving, not stubborn about defending your mistakes.
  • Do not twist one mistake into a larger issue or use it as an excuse to stop trying.
  • Ask for clarification when feedback is unclear.
  • Treat feedback as an opportunity to become better.
๐ŸงญDuty Over OutcomeNobody cares about it unless you care about it yourself.

Excellence lies in fulfilling your responsibilities with dedication, regardless of whether you immediately receive recognition or rewards.

  • Do your work because it is your responsibility, not merely because someone is watching.
  • Give your best even when the outcome is uncertain.
  • Do not measure your contribution only by immediate rewards.
  • Take pride in doing things properly.
  • Consistent effort, integrity, and dedication create better long-term outcomes.
๐Ÿ’ŽBe an Asset, Not an ExpenseOur impact defines our rewards.

Be remembered for the value you create, not merely the resources you consume.

  • Contribute meaningfully to the organisation.
  • Bring solutions, ideas, energy, and reliability.
  • Be someone the team can depend on.
  • Look for ways to make processes, projects, and people better.
  • Ask yourself: "What value did I create today?"
โฑ๏ธStay Active and Manage Your TimeA busy schedule is not an excuse for poor ownership.

Time management is a fundamental part of this internship.

  • Complete tasks on time.
  • Plan your leaves responsibly and provide at least 14 daysโ€™ notice for planned leave.
  • Leave requests with less than 14 daysโ€™ notice may not be approved, except in genuine emergencies or unforeseen circumstances.
  • Before taking leave, ensure pending responsibilities are completed or properly handed over and communicated to the relevant team members or Head.
  • Do not consider leave approved merely because you have informed someone. Obtain approval through the appropriate HFC process before taking leave.
  • Send updates without fail.
  • Check the HFC portal and relevant groups regularly.
  • Stay updated on tasks, announcements, deadlines, and responsibilities.
  • Do not wait until the last moment to communicate a problem.
  • If you have multiple responsibilities, prioritise and manage them instead of allowing communication or commitments to suffer.
  • Everyone has a full plate. The ability to manage that plate is part of the learning experience.
โœ…Attendance Is Earned Through ContributionWhen work is done selflessly and consistently, the hours follow naturally.

Attendance is not something to negotiate; it is earned through genuine participation and contribution.

  • Complete your responsibilities sincerely.
  • Participate actively in meetings and HFC activities.
  • Your commitment and contribution should naturally reflect in your attendance and overall internship engagement.
  • Do not focus only on completing hours. Focus on creating value.
๐ŸŽฅMeeting EtiquetteEvery HFC meeting requires preparation, attention, and active participation.
Before the Meeting
  • Join HFC-related online meetings at least 5 minutes before the scheduled start time.
  • Keep a note-taking medium ready: either paper and pen or a notes app.
  • Come prepared with the necessary information, files, and updates.
During the Meeting
  • Keep your video ON.
  • Turning your video off briefly when genuinely necessary is acceptable.
  • If you are unable to keep your video on for the meeting, you may leave the meeting.
  • Pay attention and actively participate.
  • Avoid zoning out. Interaction, questions, reactions, and participation help keep meetings productive.
  • Do not simply agree or nod. Speak up when you have something meaningful to contribute.
  • Take notes and ensure that important information is captured.
  • If you are leading a team, encourage your team members to take notes as well.
Offline Events
  • Be present at the venue at least 10 minutes before the scheduled start time.
  • Be prepared to contribute rather than simply attend.
๐Ÿ–ฅ๏ธPortal, Groups and Daily OperationsThe official internship portal is internship.happyfolksclub.com.
  • Check the portal and relevant HFC groups regularly.
  • Admins must ensure that interns are added to the appropriate groups.
  • Relevant group and portal responsibilities should be checked and managed on a daily basis.
  • Do not rely solely on verbal communication for important work-related information.
  • Keep yourself updated with the latest tasks, announcements, and instructions.
๐Ÿ”‘Access and Information SharingSmooth collaboration requires everyone to have the right access.
  • Any material, content, sheet, file, or link shared for HFC work must either have public access enabled where appropriate or have access granted to the respective Head.
  • Do not assume that someone has access to a file simply because you shared the link.
  • Verify that the required people can actually view or work on the material.
  • Phone numbers and contact information of interns available through the HFC dashboard must be used responsibly and only for legitimate HFC-related communication.
Mandatory emails to have edit access to the information shared

  • Do not share internal information outside the organisation without permission.
  • Do not use HFC information for personal benefit.
  • Respect the privacy of fellow interns, seniors, members, and other people associated with HFC.
๐Ÿ›ก๏ธDo Not Misuse or Misrepresent HFCRepresenting HFC is a responsibility.

Don't use HFC work as an excuse in front of your parents or any other committment.

  • Do not misuse HFC's name, identity, information, resources, or affiliation for personal purposes.
  • Do not represent yourself as speaking on behalf of HFC unless you are authorised to do so.
  • Do not use HFC's name to gain personal credibility, access, influence, or advantage.
  • Maintain the dignity and reputation of HFC in both online and offline spaces.
๐Ÿ“œConversion from one Internship Type to AnotherWhenever you scale down your internship, 30% of your hours are lost! Scaling up has its own rules!

500 to 300 - 30% hours lost 300 to 60 - 30% hours lost 60 to 30 - 30% hours lost 30 to 60 - IS POSSIBLE with certification 60 to 300 - IS POSSIBLE with certification 300 to 500 - NOT POSSIBLE

โšกBe the EnergyOur Business is Happiness.

Bring positivity into the organisation.

  • Support your teammates.
  • Be inclusive.
  • Encourage participation.
  • Celebrate seniors and their experiences.
  • Create opportunities for bonding and networking.
  • Use appropriate humour to make interactions enjoyable without compromising respect or professionalism.
  • Remember that people may remember how you made them feel long after they forget the details of a meeting.
๐ŸŒLive the MissionHFC is bigger than individual tasks.
  • Uphold HFC's values.
  • Respect and celebrate seniors.
  • Contribute to building a happier and more connected Bharat.
  • Approach your work with empathy, responsibility, and purpose.
  • Remember why the work matters, not just what task you were assigned.
๐Ÿ…Professionalism Is Non-NegotiableYour conduct is part of HFC's brand.

Every intern represents HFC.

  • Be punctual and respectful.
  • Communicate professionally.
  • Honour your commitments.
  • Maintain appropriate behaviour online and offline.
  • Protect confidential information.
  • Treat seniors, teammates, and members with dignity.
  • Never allow personal behaviour to damage HFC's reputation.
๐Ÿง HFC rewards easy, but also punishes quickly!A termination can happen without any warning too, if commitment is invisible.

HFC may have a lenient recruitment process, but it has a quick and unforgiving termination process. Policy violations, consistently low commitment, poor ownership, repeated communication gaps, dishonesty, or behaviour that damages the organisation may result in immediate termination of the internship.

  • Duty over outcome.
  • Ownership over excuses.
  • Growth over ego.
  • Team over self.
  • Value over validation.

A Retailer is an intern who invests a certain number of hours and acts as a seller for the Study Buddy books and other HFC products. For each set sold they earn a number of hours decided beforehand. It usually lasts about 25 days.

It is a valuable way to build practical skills: communication, confidence and salesmanship, by approaching people, presenting a product and learning from real conversations.

  1. Earn hours

Under the current scheme: 2 hours for every set (5 notebooks) sold, 6+ for an Anti-slip Mat, and 10+ for a Magic Walking Stick. Bonus hours are added on completing your targets.

  2. Stay in touch with your wholesaler

Update your wholesaler on every transaction: sales, payments and progress. For online payments share screenshots and payment proofs. For offline sales, submit the payment to the HFC Head Office as soon as possible (online payment to the Head Office is also fine).

  3. Return unsold products

At the end of the selling period, return unsold products to the HFC Head Office by courier, porter or in person, promptly.

  4. Be honest

Fake proofs, edited screenshots, false transaction details or any fraud are not tolerated. Strict action may be taken.

Changing your internship type

To upgrade from 30 to 60 or 300 hours, from 60 to 300, or from 300 to 500, raise a ticket in the HFC Internship Portal asking for the internship-hour change.

Note: if an intern shifts from 500 to 300 or from 300 to 60, they lose 30% of their earned hours.

Earning Hours

How hours, stipends and bonuses work

Work done = hours. Time spent does not equal hours.

Attendance is earned through completed tasks, not just showing up.

Each intern must earn the required work hours every month. Failing to meet hours can lead to termination of the internship.

How to earn your attendance

Tasks do not adapt to you, you have to adapt to tasks.

  1. Find a task

Tasks are posted in the General Group and in the All Tasks tab of the HFC Internship Portal. Choose a task suitable for you.

  2. Confirm with the person in charge

Contact the person in charge (named in the task message) before you start. Take only tasks you can complete on time, and inform them beforehand about exams, trips or other commitments.

  3. Complete it

Hours depend on task difficulty, and offline tasks earn more than online ones. No task available? WhatsApp 8050454886.

How your hours get credited

  1. Send your proof

When you finish the task, contact the person in charge and send your picture as proof to the head.

  2. The head records it

The head enters it in the spreadsheet, which shows your name, the task taken up and the number of hours you got.

  3. Siddharth reviews

Later in the day Siddharth checks the spreadsheet. He has 3 options: yes, no, QA tests. He reviews the work and the hours and approves it based on that.

Three ways to earn hours
